Italy’s Best Romantic Urban Views
What do you get when you pair Italy’s ultimate power saint with gorgeous breath taking urban Italian vistas? Romanza – and just in time to heat things up a bit before this frosty St. Valentine’s Day crosses the calendar. In ancient Rome there were actually numerous sainted Valentines and we’re fine with that, because the world never suffered from too much love. And love is what you’re bound to fall in when crossing the Ponte Sant’Angelo over the River Tiber in Rome. This pedestrian span is anything but plain: Hadrian’s Bridge in antiquity, and later used by pilgrims making their way to St. Peter’s Basilica, the Ponte Sant’Angelo is studded with ten statues of angels. From the marble-covered stone bridge there are fetching views of the Castel Sant’Angelo, the historic Borgo district and of course of the Tiber itself. Continue reading

Frog Omelet? Make It Mantova
With unmatched Renaissance artistic heritage in such abundance in Italian cities like Florence, it is easy to overlook other unsung jewels of the Renaissance in Italy, like the towns in Lombardy’s vast, fertile alluvial plain – the Po Valley or Pianura Padana. One of these is Mantova (Mantua), the city made famous by Virgil and Shakespeare, and where two unofficial specialties are great architecture and omelettes with onions. Or frogs.
That’s right, Mantova is going to surprise you. Culturally as well as gastronomically. This is the place where tortelli di zucca and agnoli alla Gonzaga were born. The region is a cornucopia of pumpkin, Parmigiano Reggiano, onions and yes, even frogs. But let’s not forget torta Mantovana sbrisolona, a crumbly cake of cornmeal, sugar and almonds. Must Do In Italy – Italy’s Artful Events in February
Winter in Italy is not only a great time to hit the ski slopes in Cortina or cozy up to a frothy cappuccino, but also to warm up to some cool cultural happenings. Go for the unconventional in Italy and you’ll almost always be richly rewarded: case in point, the show L’Italia e gli italiani, which is Italy and the Italians as seen by Magnum photographers, at the Palazzo Reale in Turin through February 26. For this unique one-off to mark 150 years of national unity, the famous photo agency dispatched nine of its top photographers to capture the best of Italy in their lenses over six months, resulting in 300 remarkable photos you can’t find anywhere else. Meet Select Italy Team: Lisa
Let’s meet Lisa:
1. Name and What do you do at Select Italy?
Lisa Zacchia, Senior Travel Consultant/Custom Trip Planning .
2. What’s your favorite Italian destination?
I love the small, charming, Italian borghi: Ferrara, Gubbio and Gradara are among my favorites. Also, it might sound bias but: Veneto. There’s a world outside Venice: Padova, Treviso, Verona, the Euganei Hills and the Valdobbiadene area: superb food tradition, great wine and unique architecture. A region that boasts a myriad of attractions and destinations rich in historical and artistic heritage.
Six Reasons To Smile In Siracusa
Ah, Siracusa! Once the teeming New York City of the ancient Mediterranean world, now a sleeping beauty of ochre and pastel Baroque buildings next to a shimmering cobalt sea, Siracusa (or Syracuse) is the shining star of southeastern Sicily and a true Italian treasure.
According to travel writers Dana Facaros and Michael Pauls, of Cadogan Guides, Siracusa “was one of the most important cities of the Western world for over a thousand years. This is the city that whipped Athens in the Peloponnesian War and put an end to her imperial dream. Later, Plato came here to teach philosophy to Syracuse’s tyrant, and Archimedes invented his brilliant machines to defend the city from the Romans.” They go on to say that the light here is “sharp and brilliant” and “that, perhaps more than anything, reminds the visitor of its Greek founders.” Continue reading

Italy’s Best Airport Food
Is there anything more depressing for the modern traveler than, when hunger strikes its primeval punch, to be forced to choose between waiting in line for a dry overpriced pastry at Starbucks or a McDonalds’ food product inside the crowded airport terminal? If some airports have improved their food game lately, across the board, no amount of Cinnabons or Sbarros is a match for the “fast” Italian food you will find in abbondanza at Italy’s major airports (and some of its secret ones, too). By way of example, let’s take Rome’s Aeroporto di Fiumicino. Continue reading
Italy’s Power Saints
Before there were celebrities there were saints, and if Hollywood can be counted on for the former, Italy ranks high in terms of the latter. And if these days saintly behavior seems to be in ever dwindling supply, let us turn to the pages of history for a quick refresher on some of Italy’s famous saints and the scenic Italian locations with which they are forever connected. Continue reading
